Susanne Prewitt

Obituary of Susanne Munsell Prewitt

Susanne Munsell Prewitt passed away quietly on February 3rd, 2024 at TidePointe’s Broad Creek Care Center in Hilton Head, SC at the grand old age of 98.  She was daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother and was very much loved by all who came in touch with her.

Susanne was born on October 14th, 1925 in Columbia, SC and grew up in Jacksonville, FL and Easton, MD.  Her schooling was well rounded; she went to high school at Friends Central, a Quaker School in Overbrooke, PA; attended college at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO earning a journalism degree; and then attended County College of Morris in Randolph, NJ earning a nursing degree at the age of 50.

Susanne met her husband of almost 50 years, Pro Vance Prewitt, Jr, at the University of Missouri just after WWII.  He was in Sigma Nu fraternity and she was in the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.  They were married on June 15th, 1948 in Easton, MD.  They had three sons and a daughter. The eldest son, Vance, was born while they were living in New York City.  Michael, Turner and Deborah were born while they were living in Hillsdale, NJ.  In 1960, they moved to Mountain Lakes, NJ where they raised their children, successfully sending all of them to college.  In 1981, they retired to Sea Pines Plantation, Hilton Head, SC.  While in Hilton Head, Susanne cofounded the local alumnae chapter of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.  After her husband Pro died, Susanne moved to the TidePointe Retirement Community in Hilton Head in 2010.  She experienced serious visual impairment from macular degeneration during her last ten years but continued to enjoy daily life, especially with the support of Ms. Heather Flowers (RN from Right at Home) and the TidePointe staff.  Susanne experienced a left side stroke one year before passing.  She was blessed by daily bedside care from Ms. Tibbie Strock (companion from Right at Home).

Susanne loved people.  She had a kind word for everyone, always found the positive side of every situation and believed success came through perseverance.  She was a loving mother as her children knew their needs always came first and she modeled kindness, graciousness and generosity over her lifetime.  She enjoyed gardening, reading, bridge, bowling, golf and above all socializing with her diverse group of friends.  She was also active in her sorority, Garden Club, College Club, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution.  At the end, her fondest wish was to be reunited in heaven with her family, friends and pets.

Preceding Susanne in death were her parents Susan and Turner, her brother Turner, her husband Pro and her daughter Deborah.  Susanne is survived by her three sons, Vance (Kimberly) of Laurel DE, Michael (Diane) of Coupeville WA, Turner (Kathy) of Mukilteo WA, her six granddaughters, Beverly (Karim), Jenny (Kyle), Sarah (Nathan), Morgan (Trevor), Laura (Michael) and Emmah (Bryon) and eleven great-grandchildren.
