Lorene (Hyslop) Hrovatin

Obituary of Lorene Marie (Hyslop) Hrovatin

Lorene Marie (Hyslop) Hrovatin passed away 11/21/2023 at the age of 93. Lorene was born in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, to Cecilia McAvoy Hyslop RN, and Dr. Leland Hyslop, a surgeon in Mount Pleasant. Lorene graduated from Resurrection HS in Lansing, Michigan and went on to graduate with a B.S from Michigan State University, where she met the “love of her life” Stan Hrovatin, who was also a student at MSU.

They were married upon his return from graduate studies at the hotel school in Lausanne, Switzerland. They moved to Chicago after the wedding, and went on to be blessed with four children. After living in the city they settled in the western suburbs of Elmhurst, where Stan was from. They were active in Elmhurst dance club, and Lorene, besides being busy raising her children, was always very involved in many different church activities, and civic organizations, AAUW, Garden club, League of Women's Voters, Visitation School, and later Montini H.S Parents Club.

Lorene was known for her stylish hats that she would wear to church in the 60s and 70s. She had her own lovely sense of style and loved bright colors. Her home was always decorated in blues and greens and she loved her garden, in which she would proudly show off. She was also known for her original delightful sense of humor, and beautiful Irish blue eyes and warm smile.

Lorene’s husband, Stan, was the GM at several city and country clubs, including the Illinois Athletic Club, Lake Shore CC, Onwentsia CC and Thorngate CC. After living in Elmhurst Lorene and Stan relocated the family to Lake Forest, where Lorene was once again involved in many local organizations and busy with family. They made many wonderful friends while in Lake Forest. In 1990 Stan retired and they relocated to Hilton Head, (at Moss Creek) where they enjoyed a well deserved life on the tennis court and golf course as well as bridge and enjoying visits from family and developing wonderful friendships along the way.

In 2004 Lorene lost her beloved Stan. Lorene then moved to Seabrook of Hilton Head, where she lived until 2022, then moved to Fraser Care Center. We would like to thank the caring staff at Fraser for the loving care that she was given while there.

Lorene leaves behind her loving children John, Karen (Mike) O’Brien, Bill, and Nancy (Bill) Holmes, along with grandchildren, Gregory Hrovatin, Conor (Holly) O’Brien, Bridget (Quinn) Collins, Molly O'Brien, Mac, Charlie, Olivia and Ruby Holmes. She will be truly missed by those that loved her and had the privilege of knowing her.

A private service will be held at a later date in Hilton Head.
