Obituary of Charles Edward Smith

Charles Edward “Ed” Smith, 93, of Hilton Head, died peacefully on February 21, 2023.

He was born in Loogootee, Indiana on February 20, 1930, to the late Harley and Helen (Turner) Smith. He was also predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Ferol Jane, his sister, Mary Margaret Wendling and his brother, William Smith.

He was a business graduate of Indiana University and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He retired in 1990 as a district manager for the J.C. Penney Company where he was employed 35 years. In 1991, he and his wife moved to Hilton Head after vacationing there for many years.

He loved having his children visit and each year hosted the “Smith Shindig” reunion with all his family. He enjoyed cooking and playing golf with his Moss Creek friends. He had a great sense of humor and had endless funny stories about his life.

He is survived by his four children, Cindy and her husband, David Jesse of Louisville, KY, Lisa and her husband, Gary Lowe of Myrtle Beach, SC, Eric and his wife, Andrea of Williamsburg, VA and Scott and his wife, Sue of Atlanta, GA. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

He was a member of St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am, Monday, March 27th. Interment will be in the columbarium at St. Francis.
