Obituary of Genevieve Coogan

GENEVIEVE K. COOGAN Genevieve K. Coogan of Hilton Head Island died Tuesday, October 17, 2017. Born in Trenton, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late John and Margaret (née Pohl) Kelty. After receiving her degree from Rider University, Genevieve moved to New York City to work in advertising at BBD&O (Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn). She met her husband James Francis Coogan Jr. (Jim) in the summer of 1964 in Bayhead, NJ, and they married in September 1965 at the Church of Our Saviour in Manhattan. They later moved to Cherry Hill, NJ, where their son Kevin was born and then to Avalon, NJ, where they enjoyed pleasant summers and many peaceful walks on the boardwalk. Hilton Head Island, SC, was their favorite vacation location and they had the good fortune of retiring there in 2003. Genevieve loved tennis, playing as a youth and continuing through her retirement, and was a coveted member of any tennis duo. She was recognized for her green thumb winning multiple competitions. She loved to cook for her family and always encouraged room for dessert. She would sing along with well-known songs, and especially enjoyed Christmas carols. She always lavished lots of attention on her beloved grandsons, JP and Jack. Genevieve is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kevin J. and M. Kathleen Coogan, and their sons JP and Jack of Washington, DC. She was preceded in death by her husband Jim in 2006. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, October 20 at 10:30 am at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church with burial in Six Oaks Cemetery. The family requests that memorials be made to the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement @ https://www.atonementfriars.org (where her uncle served as a friar) or to Holy Trinity Catholic School @ https://htsdc.org/support-hts/ways-to-give/ (where her grandchildren go to school).
