Obituary of Bob Craig

Sea Pines resident Robert T. Craig died at home on December 25, 2018, following a short illness. Bob was born in Niagara Falls, NY on October 10, 1927, the only child of Gilbert and Marion Craig, both immigrants from Scotland. The family moved to the west side of Cleveland, Ohio, where Bob graduated from Rocky River High School. After obtaining a BSEE degree from MIT, he returned to Cleveland to work for NASA and later, TRW. During that time he also earned his MSEE at Case Western Reserve University. In 1957 he married Nancy Wilson, and in 1961 they moved to Pepper Pike, Ohio where they built a home and raised their two children Robert T. Jr. and Elizabeth.

Bob was a leader at work and in the community. In 1973 he became VP and General Manager of TRW’s Power Accessories Division, which he led as it grew from a $15M operation into a $150M operation, largely through a significant increase in market share. He was active in youth sports, coaching baseball teams and serving as the little league baseball commissioner and the president of the Orange Education & Recreation Commission. Upon retirement in 1987, he and Nancy moved permanently to Hilton Head, where Bob played USTA tennis at Sea Pines Country Club, taught inmates at the Beaufort County Detention Center, and served on the board of the South Carolina United Way. A lifelong skier and tennis player, Bob also enjoyed worldwide travel with Nancy and later, with his children and grandchildren; highlights included river cruises in France, ski trips in Austria, and photo safaris in Africa.

Bob will be inurned at Providence Presbyterian Church next to Nancy who died in 2006. He is survived by his son Rob (Beth) of Ellicott City, MD, his daughter Liz Craig Camis (KC) of Henderson, NV, and grandchildren Robert T. (Taylor) Craig, III, Alex Craig, and Alanna Craig. The family are thankful for the compassion and kindness shown along his journey by Bob’s many wonderful friends. Visitation will be Saturday, December 29, 2018 at The Island Funeral Home at 4 Cardinal Rd. from 3pm until 5:30pm. A memorial service will be held at Providence Presbyterian Church at a later date. Those who wish may make donations to Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, P.O. Box 3827, Bluffton, SC 29910.
