Obituary of Carl J. Eckerle

Carl J. Eckerle of Hilton Head Island, SC passed away on May 22, 2023.  He was 95 years old.

Carl was born in Ridgewood, Queens, NY on January 16, 1928, to Joseph and Matilda Eckerle.   After completing high school, he joined the Army for WWII and served two years in Italy where he was in the Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron and achieved the rank of Corporal.  He received the WWII Victory Medal and an Army of Occupation Medal.  (He loved Italy and after the war he travelled back to visit with his wife many times.)

After leaving the Army, Carl began work in the aerospace industry where he met his wife, Shirley.  He used the GI Bill to attend Hofstra University on Long Island and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration.  Carl resided in Huntington, Long Island, NY and worked in the aerospace industry until his retirement.  He was an active member of the Huntington Elks Club as well as the Head of The Bay Club and served in the New York Council Navy League.  He was an avid boater and enjoyed snow skiing.  After many years of visiting to play tennis, Carl and Shirley moved to Hilton Head Island upon retirement.

Carl is survived by his son Mark and daughter-in-law Kim Montague of Canmore, Alberta, Canada and their children Astrid and Anton; his daughter Janice Moran and son-in-law Patrick of Centennial, Colorado and their children Andrew and Connor, as well as Connor’s son/Carl’s great grandson Conlan.

Carl will be inurned at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Columbarium where a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 1st at 10:00am.  All are welcome to attend.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Carl to the Autism Society at https://autismsociety.org or the National World War II Museum at https://www.nationalww2museum.org.
