Obituary of Linda Volkhardt

Linda J. Volkhardt, 90, of Hilton Head passed away on February 22, 2023. Linda was born January 31, 1933, to Stanley and Isabel (Pratt) Barger in Ossining, New York, where she grew up and later was graduated from Ossining High School in 1951.

Linda was an avid and natural athlete, excelling in horseback riding, bowling, tennis, and especially golf, which she continued to enjoy throughout her life. Linda was a frequent presence among her many friends in the Lowcountry Women’s Golf Association. After a brief career in corporate administration at Best Foods, Linda retired to raise her sons Michael and Stephen.

Linda married John M. (Jack) Volkhardt in 1979 and was soon introduced to Moss Creek Plantation through Jack’s company’s (CPC North America) support of the LPGA’s CPC International Golf Tournament, which was held from 1979-1982. After years of national and international travel, Linda and Jack soon made the move from Fort Lee, New Jersey and Berkeley Springs, West Virginia to Moss Creek, which became their cherished primary residence and where they loved to entertain.

Linda and Jack led an active, fulfilling, and fully engaged life at Moss Creek for decades. From 1985-1991, Jack served as President of the Full Circle Corporation in Moss Creek, which purchased and developed Moss Creek Plantation from U. S. Shelter and later delivered control of the plantation to the Homeowners Association.

Linda moved to The Cypress of Hilton Head mid-2022 and was profoundly grateful for the many welcoming friends she made during her brief time there. Linda was a thoughtful, gracious, and constant presence in the lives of so many people, whose smile will be greatly missed by the family and friends who made her life in Hilton Head so fulfilling.

Linda was predeceased by her son; Stephen in 1980 and husband Jack in 2015. She is survived by her son; Michael Curry (Meg) and Jack’s daughters: Jacqueline Lynn (Stuart) of Worcester, Massachusetts, Janet Green (Maury) of Pleasanton, California, Dana Cleary of Simpsonville, South Carolina, as well as five grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Moss Creek Charitable Fund, c/o Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, P.O. Box 23019, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina 29925.
