Thomas Cuomo

Obituary of Thomas Anthony Cuomo

On Monday, November 7, 2022, Thomas Anthony Cuomo of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, passed away at age ninety-one.

Tom was born on December 29, 1930, in Belleville New Jersey, to Marie and Daniel Cuomo. He graduated from Belleville High School and after serving as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955, he went on to Rutgers University where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1961.

Tom had a long and very successful professional career, nineteen years of which were at Singer Sewing Machine and twelve years of which were at Ashland Oil Company, serving as a Vice President and General Manager at both companies. Tom’s leadership style was characterized by a people-first approach, endearing him to employees throughout his career.

While Tom enjoyed his business life, his true love was his wife Gwin whom he married in 1979. Together they traveled the world and enjoyed time with friends, and while Gwin taught him how to play tennis, Tom taught her golf as the game was a true passion of his. Not many can claim to have both scored their age and had a hole-in-one, but Tom achieved both feats.

Tom and Gwin retired to Hilton Head Island in 1992 and enjoyed friends, travel, and keeping up with the latest about their beloved grandchildren Max and Abbey, of whom they were so incredibly proud. Tom prematurely lost the love of his life when Gwin passed in 2013, however, he stayed active with his social activities and was truly a fixture on the golf course at the Country Club of Hilton Head. Tom never missed the chance to update his friends about the latest from his children and grandchildren.

Tom was a caring soul, a true gentleman, and an overall great human being. Books could be written about how to treat others, based on the way Tom treated everyone he met. We should all aspire to be like him.

Tom is survived by his stepson; Mark Roberts and his stepdaughter-in-law Barrie Roberts (of Bay Head, NJ), as well as his grandchildren; Max Roberts and Abbey Roberts (both in New York City). He is additionally survived by his daughter; Cindy Doeringer, son-in-law Richard Doeringer, and his grandchildren; Cory, Lacy, and Jeffrey Doeringer.

He is predeceased by his parents; Marie and Daniel Cuomo, his brother; Donald Cuomo, his ever-loving wife; Gwin, and his stepdaughter; Lauren Roberts Bryant, who also passed away far too early in 2004.

There is no public service planned. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lauren Roberts Bryant Scholarship Fund at Dickinson College, Carlisle Pennsylvania.
