Obituary of Lucy S. Marshall

Lucy Smith Marshall (1940 – 2022) Hilton Head, SC/formerly of Darien, Connecticut.

Lucy Smith Marshall age 81, passed peacefully on April 29th, 2022.  

Born December 23, 1940, in Maumee, Ohio to Charles J. Smith and Lillie vanSaun Berry Smith, Lucy was raised in Short Hills, New Jersey. Lucy attended Short Hills Country Day School and St. Anne’s School in Charlottesville, Virginia. and spent her summers on Martha’s Vineyard at Seven Gates Farm, West Tisbury. Lucy and her former husband of 32 years, David L. Marshall, raised their family in Darien, Connecticut with four years in Melbourne, Australia. Known for her strong competitive spirit in any game, including tennis, bowling and bridge; all of which she enjoyed at Wee Burn Country Club. She was blessed with a wide circle of friends and loved to share stories and laughs with anyone. An active member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Darien and later All Saints Church in Hilton Head, Lucy was a strong believer in prayer and had a knack for offering sage advice. She found joy in helping others in her cherished role as a Stephen minister. In addition, Lucy served as a Red Cross Volunteer and Girl Scout Leader for many years.   

Granny to some, Big Lucy to all, she was the life of the party. Lucy was feisty and full of life. Known for her generosity, compassion, and sense of humor, she will be missed.

Lucy is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Charles H. Smith and Nicholas S. Smith, and her third child Andrew L. Marshall. Lucy is survived by her brother Robert J. Smith and her sister Sue Smith Ham and her husband, Sam (Hilton Head).  She is also survived by her children: daughter Lucy Marshall West, and her husband, Tim (Westport, Connecticut) her children: Andrew Sandor, Charlie Sandor, David Sandor, Stephen Sandor; and Jennifer Marshall Strong and her husband Doug, (Penfield, New York), and their children: Marshall Strong, Meghan Strong (Atticus Graven), Sarah Strong; and Christopher Lawrence Marshall and his wife Angel (Monclova, Ohio) and their children: Bradley Marshall, Timothy Marshall, Kaitlyn Marshall; and Stephen Hathaway Marshall and his wife Monique (Beverly, Massachusetts) and their children: Lucy Marshall, and Brooks Marshall. Lucy was proud of her twelve grandchildren.

The family is very grateful to Lucy’s many friends and neighbors including Marie Hartis, Ed Wise, and her devoted sister Sue, who together provided Lucy the support and care which enabled her to stay in her own home.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 17 at 11:00 am at All Saints Episcopal Church, Hilton Head, SC.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Lucy’s memory to All Saints Church or a charity of choice.
