Obituary of Lawrence Hazzard

Lawrence “Larry” W. Hazzard, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, 91, of Hilton Head Island, SC, passed away at his home in Hilton Head Plantation, Hilton Head Island, SC.  He was born on March 31, 1930 in Hope, AR, the son of the late Medford and Clemmie Hazzard.  He moved to Hilton Head Island in 1990.  He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Laurie and James Gombert, Jr. of Allentown, PA; Sharon Hazzard and Edward Riley of Seattle, WA; and Carolyn and John William Kenawell of Pittsburgh, PA; six grandchildren, Zachary, Sophie (Derrick), Kellyn (Jon), Jacey (Anthony), Allie, and KatieRose, and his great-granddaughter, Raelyn.  He was preceded in death by his wife of over 58 years Martha Wray Hazzard.  He was also preceded in death by his brother James W. Hazzard.

 

Mr. Hazzard was a graduate of the University of Arkansas receiving a B.S. degree in Business Administration with a major in Marketing.  He was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi.  He served in the United States Navy for four years after graduating from Naval Officer’s Candidate School in Newport, RI, with an Ensign Commission.  He was on an ammunition ship, the USS Titania and was the Operations Officer on the USS Caliente, a fleet tanker, all in the Pacific and Far East.  As part of a naval task force, he participated in Operations Redwing which involved the testing of hydrogen bombs at Eniwetok and Bikini in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific in 1956.

 

Mr. Hazzard was employed by Alcoa Inc. (Aluminum Company of America) for 34 years in various sales and marketing positions in Dallas, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Davenport, IA.  He was an avid golfer and member of the Country Club of Hilton Head where he was the former president and current treasurer of the Men’s Golf Association.  He was a member of St. Andrew by the Sea United Methodist Church.  A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held later in the year.
