Obituary of Richard W. Waltz

 

Richard (Dick) Waltz, long-time Hilton Head resident, passed away on Friday, April 9 at the age of 93. Born May 20, 1927 in Cleveland, OH, Dick was raised in Hudson, OH and graduated from Hudson High School in 1945. The following month he entered the U.S. Navy, serving on Guam at Fleet Weather Central as an aerographer.

 

Dick is predeceased by his loving wife, Marjorie (Marty) Waltz, née Reiner, whom he married on September 9, 1948. He is also predeceased by his parents, Harold and Bertha Waltz, his brother, Bob Waltz, and his son-in-law, Bill Martin.

 

Dick is lovingly remembered by his two children, Ellen Martin of Avon Lake, OH and Todd Waltz (Cindy) of Palm Coast, FL, as well as his two grandchildren, Melissa Martin of Bay Village, OH, Ryan Martin (Meghan) of North Olmsted, OH, and his great-grandson, Everett.

 

Dick attended the College of Wooster and Miami University, graduating from Miami in May 1949 with a BS in Industrial Management. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity and Delta Sigma Pi professional business fraternity.

 

Upon graduation from Miami he joined Osborn Manufacturing in Cleveland, OH where he held positions in Production Control, Sales, Manufacturing Management, Personnel, and Management of the Grinding Wheel Division. During this time Dick was a member of The Cleveland Industrial Relations Association, The Cleveland Labor Relations Institute, and the Associated Industries of Cleveland. He served on the boards of the YMCA and League Park Center.

 

Dick joined TRW Automotive World Wide Sector in 1968 and served in several Human Relations capacities, retiring as Director of Employee Relations. He worked extensively with TRW’s operations both in the United States and Europe.

 

Prior to retirement, Dick and Marty enjoyed sailing and spent many happy hours sailing Lake Erie, Lake Huron, and the North Channel. Upon their retirement in1989 they spent six months sailing the Florida Keys aboard their boat, Peregrine, after which they returned to their home on Hilton Head Island. In the early years of their retirement they cruised aboard their boat on the southern East Coast, the Florida Keys, and Florida’s East and Gulf Coast for several months each spring until they sold their boat in 1997.

 

Both Dick and Marty enjoyed traveling and they toured Europe extensively as well as Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii. When travelling state-side, they enjoyed exploring many of our National Parks.

 

In addition to his great family and work accomplishments, Dick was extremely active in the community. He was Commodore of the Vermillion Yacht Club in Vermilion, OH and served on its Board of Directors for a number of years. He was active in the United States Sail and Power Squadron serving as Commander of the Hilton Head Island Squadron and as Secretary of District 26. He was a member of the Hilton Head Plantation Yacht Club and served as President of the Low County Association of Commodores. Dick served on the Board of the Hilton Head Plantation Property Owners Association from 1998 to 2001 and presided as President in 2000/2001; he also served on the Plantation’s Nominating Committee for a number of years. He was a member of the Beaufort County Transportation Committee for six years and served on the Board of the Hilton Head Island Land Trust.

 

Both Marty and Dick were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head.
