James Bryant

Obituary of James Claude Bryant

James Claude Bryant died peacefully at the age of 89 in his home on March 19, 2021. He was born in Rochester, NY in 1931, and graduated from Brockport State University Magna Cum Laude, continuing on to gain his master’s degree from Hofstra University. He served in the US Army during the Korean conflict, but enjoyed a 35 year school teaching career. He had a passion for history, particularly in the U.S. and his country of heritage, Scotland.

James loved all sports, played college basketball, coached roller hockey, and became an avid golfer in retirement.

He served faithfully in many churches over his lifetime, ranging in duties from Deacon, Trustee, Sunday school Teacher, and singing in the choir. He was also one of the founders of Sea Island Chapel on Hilton Head.

James had a great curiosity for life, enjoying every moment to its fullest, he traveled at every opportunity, and would never turn down an adventure. He was a licensed certified land and sea pilot, and licensed teacher of ground school for potential pilots. He loved sailing, boating, water skiing, jet skiing, scuba diving, snowmobiling, and owned a floatplane that he would fly from the lake behind his vacation home in Maine. He had a deep thirst for knowledge, and was always reading, learning and researching for a new interest.

His love and excitement for life was an inspiration to all who have met him. He made friends everywhere he went and was loved by all.

He is survived by his loving wife, Muriel, of 66 years, his grandchildren Kristen, Michael, and Melissa, as well as his 5 great-grandchildren.
