Obituary of John William Salt

(Captain) John William Salt, 80, went to be with the Lord on January 28, 2021 at his home in Hilton Head Island, SC.

 

 His life’s journey began on August 27, 1940, in Niagara Falls, NY, the son of Sam and Olive (Luick) Salt.  On March 1, 1969, he married and is survived by his sweetheart, Suzanne (Springer) Salt.  John was a 1958 graduate of DeVeaux School.  He attended Ohio Wesleyan University and graduated from the Simmons School of Embalming and Mortuary Science, Syracuse, NY.

 

  John served in the US Army in the Vietnam War, with C Company, 2nd Battalion 7th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division Airborne. Upon returning state side he spent his career in Binghamton, NY, as a Funeral Director, offering guidance, sensitivity, and understanding to families in their darkest hour. He was very involved in his community and church, serving as the Commander of his local US Power Squadron, President of the Lions Club, he served on the Board of Directors for an insurance company, a medical center, as well as the Treasure of Zion Episcopal Church in Windsor, NY.  John and Susie raised their family for 36 years in the Windsor, NY community.

 

  In his spare time, John loved boating and golfing with his many friends.  John will be remembered for his love of boats, Corvettes, potato chips, and Manhattan’s.  John was an avid fan of his beloved Buffalo Bills.  He enjoyed the last several years being a snowbird, spending his winters in Hilton Head, SC, and his summers in Henderson Harbor, NY.  Grandpa enjoyed traveling to his many grandchildren’s sporting events to cheer them on from the sidelines.

 

   In addition to his wife of 51 years, he is survived by his three children:  Christopher Salt and Kristie Shevin of Longmont, CO, Heather Friedah and Bill of York, PA, David Salt and Jessica of Windsor, NY; nine grandchildren Spencer Salt, Addison, and Keaton Shevin; Jack and Stella Friedah; Riley, Coen, Braelynn, and Landry Salt; one sister and brother-in-law Marlene and Robert Morazzano.

 

   He is preceded in death by his parents, mother and father-in-law, Barbara, and Donald Springer.

 

   Services will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday at Island Funeral Home and Crematory, Hilton Head Island.
