Obituary of Joseph Sanker

Joseph “Joe” Sanker passed away on April 4, 2018. He was born on May 6, 1932 in Jersey City, NJ. Joe attended Rutgers University, then went on to Washington University, St. Louis and New York University Schools of Dentistry. He practiced in his native New Jersey for 40 years as well as teaching at NYU and NJ Dental Schools’ prosthodontic departments. Prior to starting his dental practice, he served as a Captain in the US Army Paratrooper Division at Fort Bragg, NC. After retiring, he continued in dentistry with his wife, Eve, at remote Native American reservations as part of the US Department of Health & Human Services. He was also a certified first responder for the National Guard and for many years provided dental care for the troops prior to their deployment. In Hilton Head he provided dental care for underserved members of the community at Volunteers in Medicine for over 15 years. Joe was an avid tennis player, enjoyed friends at his gourmet cooking club, and his role in the activities at the Hilton Head Plantation Recreation Committee. He and Eve traveled to many exotic locations and more recently made many trips to see their cherished children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, sons, Dr. Robert Sanker (wife Dini), Daniel Sanker, and daughter Polly Sanker; seven grandchildren, Lisa Rebich, Dr. Eric Rebich, Dr. Scott Rebich; Erica, Lauren, Julian and Jon Sanker; and six great-grandchildren; Khloe, Julius, Ella, Jack, London and Ivy. It was a life well-lived. A burial service will be held at Six Oaks Cemetery in Sea Pines at 1:30 pm on Friday, April 6.
