Obituary of Fordyce Ewing Van Winkle

Fordyce Ewing Van Winkle Fordy was born on December 29, 1927 in New York City, the daughter of William Francis Cochran Ewing and Emily Fordyce Dodge. She attended Bennington College and then married George W. Staempfli with whom she had two daughters. Fordy worked in the banking industry for many years and was the first female officer at Bankers Trust. On the Van Winkles’ retirement, they traveled around the country in an RV and sailed the inland waterway a number of times, stopping in Hilton Head each time. They moved to Hilton Head Plantation in 1981 and to The Cypress in 1998. Fordy has spent every summer of her life in Sorrento, Maine and had plans to return again this summer. Fordy was one of the founding members of the Hilton Head Planned Parenthood and volunteered there for many years and for the last 20 years with Volunteers in Medicine. She is survived by a sister, Jennifer Ewing, two daughters, Candida Staempfli Steel and Fordyce Staempfli Williams, her sons-in-law, Terry Steel and Holden B. Williams, and a grandson, Gifford Staempfli Williams. A celebration of Fordy’s life will be held at the Cypress Clubhouse, 20 Ladyslipper Lane, Saturday, June 23 at 4 pm.
