Obituary of James A Somerville

James A Somerville, 74, died June 13, 2018 on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. He is predeceased by parents, James and Frances Somerville, brother, Frank Somerville and sister, Jane S. McGhee. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Barbara (Bobbie) and children, Blake (Laurie) of Bay Village, Ohio; Justin of Denver, Colorado; granddaughters, Grace and Riley, and sister, Nancy Somerville Korvin (Marty Nott) of Rochester, N.Y. Jim, together with his family, lived in the Fort Hunt section of Alexandria, Virginia, graduating from Mount Vernon High School in 1962. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute, University of Maryland and University of Pennsylvania, obtaining his Bachelors and Masters of Mechanical Engineering and Masters of Business Administration degrees. He was a member of ODK and Engineering honoraries. Jim made his career in engineering and managing several divisions working at DuPont for 30 years and Berg Electronics. While at DuPont and Berg, he was issued several patents. After retiring, Jim taught Business Administration at Penn State University in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In addition, he obtained his real estate license and had a successful career working for several real estate companies on his beloved Hilton Head Island, S.C. Jim was active with several clubs in Hilton Head Plantation and served as president of the Newcomers Club. He was active in the local Sertoma club and their many activities. Jim was a scuba diver, golfer, bicyclist, member of The Country Club of Hilton Head and he loved to travel the world with his wife, Bobbie. The Somerville family has specifically requested in lieu of flowers that donations can be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation at Parkinson.org or Parkinson’s Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131 or to the local Sertoma club to Wolfgang Saenger,17 Shell Road, Hilton Head, SC, 29928. Friends are invited to celebrate Jim’s life with the family at a Columbarium interment on August 3, 2018 at 10:00 am. It will be held at Six Oaks Cemetery at 175 Green Wood Drive in Hilton Head at which time a memorial guestbook may be signed. A small reception to follow at the home.
