Obituary of Evelyn McQuagge Warren

Evelyn McQuagge Warren 1919-2017 Evelyn Rebecca McQuagge Warren, born October 15, 1919 in Stone County MS, died May 12, 2017 on Hilton Head Island, SC. Her parents were Daniel and Rebecca Hickman McQuagge. She is preceded in death by sisters Esther and Exa Mae and brother Carlton. She was proud of her Southern heritage and especially proud of quite a few family members who devoted their careers to the improvement and expansion of educational opportunities at all levels in the State of Mississippi. Evelyn was valedictorian of her high school class, attended Perkinston Jr. College and graduated from what is presently known as the Univ. of Southern Mississippi in 1941 with a degree in Commerce and English. She was an honors graduate at both colleges and a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Pi Omega Pi honor societies. For the following 5 years she was employed by the US Government at the National Youth Administration and the Office of Price Administration in Hattiesburg, MS, and later by the Department of the Navy in San Diego, CA. In February 1946 she married Major Edward J. Warren, who had just returned from Nagasaki, Japan, where he had served his last tour of duty with the US Army. They returned to Ed’s home town, Wilmington, DE, where he continued his employment as an engineer with Hercules, Inc. and she worked for the DuPont Co. In 1947 they were transferred to Brunswick, GA and it was there, and on St. Simon’s Island, GA, that they lived for the next ten years. During that time two daughters and a son were added to the family. Another transfer took the family to Hattiesburg, MS for 4 years and then, in 1960, back to Wilmington where they lived for the next 38 years. Evelyn kept busy with the activities of the children, including volunteering as Girl Scout Leader and Cub Scout Den Mother, until they left for college. She then found time for activities such as the Brandywine Council of Civic Assns., the Delaware Art Museum Council and the DAR. She served as Pres. of the Woodbrook Civic Assn. in 1973 and was a member of St. Joseph’s on the Brandywine Catholic Church. Also, she was a member of the Hercules Country Club’s duplicate bridge group for 30 years. In 1998 Evelyn and Ed moved to TidePointe on Hilton Head Island. While there she led an active life, sang in the annual TidePointe musical show, played bridge and organized both the poker club and the poetry group. She made many wonderful friends and truly loved the wonderful staff of TidePointe who cared for her in so many ways. Always fashionable, she was known for her beautiful scarves. Evelyn’s husband passed away in 2004. She is survived by three children; Rebecca Warren Hayes (Donald) of Houston, TX; Robert E. Warren (Sherrie) of Ponte Vedra, FL; and Sarah Warren Adams (Bob) of Frisco, TX. She has six grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She will be buried in St. Joseph’s on the Brandywine Cemetery in Greenville, DE. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, October 7, 2017 at St. Joseph’s on the Brandywine Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, P.O. Box 3827, Bluffton, SC 29910. The Island Funeral Home and Crematory. islandfuneralhome.com.
