“Betty,” age 82, of Hilton Head Island, formerly of Pine Beach, NJ, died peacefully on September 26, 2017, at NHC Healthcare of Bluffton, SC with her family surrounding her. Born July 17, 1935 in Philadelphia, PA, to Matthew Thomas, Jr and Elizabeth Mary (Leaf) McGuire, she is predeceased by her sister, Mary Jo Leyden, her brother, James Edward McGuire, and her beloved husband of almost 50 years, Robert Emmett Hunt, Sr.
Betty grew up in Upper Darby, PA, graduating from St. Leonard’s Academy in 1953 and Rosemont College in 1957. She married Bob on June 15, 1957 at St. Laurence Catholic Church in Upper Darby. After 32 years in Pine Beach, NJ, they moved to Hilton Head Island in 1997 and thoroughly embraced their island retirement years. Betty loved to play cards and travel, visiting 49 of our 50 states! She especially enjoyed her time volunteering for the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, Friends of God (FOG), Glowings, Hospice Community Thrift Shop, Cookie Ministry, Hilton Head Island Elementary School and other ministries through St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church.
After writing each other for 29 years, Betty first met her pen pal, Yvonne Holloway, from Sheffield, England in 1974. They continued to visit each other every few years, remaining dear friends for over 70 years. Betty always had a huge, heartfelt smile for all those she met along her beautiful life.
