Robina (Ruby) Chatalian Poschmann passed away peacefully at her home in Port Royal Plantation on Hilton Head Island on October 6, 2017. She was born December 24, 1916 in Providence, Rhode Island to Sarkis and Marina Davidian Chatalian. She was predeceased by her parents and her three brothers, Harry, George, and Mitch Chatalian. Robina accomplished many things in her long life of over 100 years but what was most important to her was the love that she bestowed on her family and friends. She was the beloved wife of George Poschmann who died in 1990 after 50 years of marriage and the beloved mother of Paul Poschmann (Lynn), Ingrid Poschmann O’Grady (Pearse) and Christina Poschmann (Jim Taylor). She was the beloved grandmother of Taylor Poschmann, Heather Prendergast (Kevin McKeown), Kevin O’Grady (Giovanna), Brian O’Grady (Erin), Thaddeus O’Grady (Jennifer), Colin O’Grady (Mari), Sean O’Grady, Cameron Taylor and the great grandmother of Manus and Cashel, Carine, Callum, Joseph, James, Lily, Mia, and Sophie. Many of her friends and caregivers called themselves her adopted daughter, including Mirian Sumner, Jean Schneiderwind, her caregivers Leticia, Mercedes, Veronica, Maria, Morgan, and Hospice Care of the Lowcountry. Robina grew up in Providence in the Armenian Church and graduated from Central High School. She once played tennis with the great Bill Tilden. She moved to New York to earn a Registered Nursing degree at Wards Island Hospital. It was there that she met the love of her life George Poschmann. In 1952 Robina became a Catholic at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Whitestone, NY. In 1953 Robina received a BS in Nursing degree from St. John’s University and an MS degree in guidance counseling and was a guidance counselor at Bethpage High School. While in Syosset, Robina competed in the U. S. National Championships at Forest Hills in the Senior Women’s division. Robina and George built a house in Port Royal Plantation in 1977 for a wonderful 40 years of her life. Robina became even more active as a tennis player, once playing an exhibition doubles match with Bobby Riggs. For many years she was organist at Holy Family Catholic Church, St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Bluffton, and finally at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis by the Sea on November 11, 2017 at 10:30 AM to be followed by a celebration of life in the Church hall where family and friends can share food, drink and remembrances of our beloved mother, grandmother and friend.
