Obituary of John Edward Myers

John Edward Myers John E. Myers ascended into heaven Saturday, October 13 at his home in TidePointe, Hilton Head, SC. John was born and raised in Scarsdale, NY in 1930. After graduation from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and he served as a rifleman in Okinawa and Korea. After discharge, John went to the University of Vermont and graduated in 1954. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Upon graduation, John became a programmer on IBM computers, but he spent most of career in the electrical and electronic wire and cable industry, starting with General Cable in Baltimore as a sales engineer, later joining Anixter Brothers where he eventually became President of Anixter International. After Anixter International, John helped form and grow Houston Wire and Cable in Houston, Texas and later became its President and CEO. Outside of work, he was a member of the Young Presidents Association, the creator and first volunteer Transit Director in Westport, Ct., honorary member of the National Association of Electrical Distributors, an active volunteer at Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) on Hilton Head, and an honorary member of the Patterson Club, in Fairfield, Ct. where he was a past President. After retirement John and his wife, Diane, moved to Hilton Head Island and have been living in the TidePointe Community. They are members of the Sea Pines Country Club where they were avid golfers; he loved Sea Pines and he had many friends there. John is survived by his wife, Diane, who he met in Baltimore and they were happily married for 62 years. They have three sons; John Jr. (Susie), Deane (Layni), and Christopher (Karen), five grandchildren; Katie Myers Dunlap (Bobby), Sally Myers Berter (Tim), Jack Myers, Sam Myers, and Daniel Myers, and four great grandchildren; Charlie and Tommy Berter, and Bo and Elliot Dunlap. A memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s Church in Hilton Head, SC at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 20th.
