Obituary of Barry Louis Grote

Barry Grote passed away peacefully on February 19, 2018 after a long battle with cancer. Born in 1949 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Barry spent 30 years in Pittsburgh, PA before retiring to Hilton Head in 2011. He is survived by Martha, his loving wife of 43 years and his two sons, Bret, and Eric and wife Gillian, as well as his adored granddaughters, Addison and Finley. Barry also leaves behind six siblings and their spouses, Judy and John Eckhart, Maryam and Ev Young, Sandy and Ron Grote, Mary and Bill Grote, Maureen and Jon Grote, and Sharon and Rick Grote. Barry’s love of golf guided him to a career in the turf industry. After attending Penn State and majoring in Turf Grass Agronomy, Barry started his career as a golf course superintendent. Within a few years, he moved into sales and sales management, calling on golf course superintendents and other turf professionals. He served in several turf related organizations, including a term as president of the Pennsylvania Turf Grass Council. A fan of several types of sports, he grew up cheering for the Cincinnati Reds. After moving to Pittsburgh in 1980 he also became an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Penguins. Barry became a volunteer soccer coach when his sons were young and grew to love the game. He spent many happy hours with his boys at the soccer field. The family will receive friends on Monday, February 26th from 3 – 5pm at The Island Funeral Home, 4 Cardinal Road, on Hilton Head Island. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 27th at 10:30am at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church, Hilton Head Island. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church or Hospice Care of the Lowcountry in Barry’s name. Islandfuneralhome.com.
